To the editor:
In response to the Rappahannock News front page query, “ABC in Flint Hill?,” I answer with a better question - “What Kind of Business Is Most Needed in Flint Hill?”
As a relative newcomer to Rappahannock County, I enter this emotion-charged public issue fitly with some trepidation. Many of my neighbors who are concerned about the social consequences of the proposed ABC store answer the question with a vehement “No!” Other neighbors point to the business benefits resulting from the co-location of the proposed ABC store and answer with a heartfelt “Yes!”
Valid points are made on both sides of the issue, but somewhere in this continuing debate a much more important question has gone unasked.
Good old-fashioned market research called “listening” should be step number one when issues like this arise, and to my knowledge, no one in the county has conducted any organized “listening.” This is a terrific opportunity for the Rappahannock News to get more involved, to function as the county’s formal “listener,” to ask the most relevant question here - 4 What kind of business is most needed in the community?”
Letters to the editor is one way to listen to the market’s needs. An opinion survey via a dip-out questionnaire is another more inclusive way, while a telephone survey is even more inclusive. No matter
