The committees of both houses of the General Assembly are now meeting long hours in an effort to give due consideration to the approximately 1,560 bills and 350 resolutions introduced as of the cut-off date of Tuesday, Jan. 26.
While the majority of bills are more or less “housekeeping” legislative matters, many can and will affect the lives of the citizens of Virginia. The following is a sampling of bills (by number and subject matter) that may be helpful to those interested in following legislative action taken:
• S.B. 53: Provides that “Carry Me Back to Old Virginia” be the song emeritus, and designate ‘The Old Dominion” official song of the Commonwealth. '. • S.B. 150 and H.B. 112 (with soime variations): Provides local option by referendum for direct election of school board members by voters of any locality. ;• S.B. 212: Provides that any county, city or town may by ordinance require a permit for purchase orlpossession of a pistol, revolver or other handgun.
