The visit of the Soviet delegation to Rappahannock County began last Wednesday when the group was picked up in Washington by Nels Parson, Nancy Reeve and Sandra Cartwright-Brown. ■ They were taken to Conyers House in Slate Mills, where their hosts were waiting.
The visitors were assigned to families based on their interests, ability to speak English, and in one case, habit. (Dick Helmer, a smoker, asked that Vladimir Lubomudrov, also a smoker, be assigned to them. The Helmers also played host to Vadim Chubinsky, who speaks some English.)
Maurice and Jane Herndon were assigned Alexei Pankin, who enjoyed discussing politics with Mr. Herndon, a veteran of the Capitol Hill political scene, and Valentin Chernykh, a scriptwriter and studio manager who speaks no English.
Sandra and Norman CartwrightBrown had as guests Elina Bystritskaya, a well-known stage and film actress (best known, to American audiences for her role in Silent Flows the Dawn in 1955) and Elena Petushkova, a senior researcher in biology at Moscow State University and an Olympic gold medal winner in 1972 for dressage.
