The staff and students of Piedmont Technical Education Center are asking parents, students, civic and business leaders to join the nation’s annual salute to vocational education during Vocational Education Week, Feb. 7-13.
This year’s theme “Vocational Education: A Competitive Edge” was selected to provide enriching educational experiences for students to better prepare them for the working world after graduation.
According to a PTEC spokesman, “vocational education is important to PTEC and other students in Virginia because it’s estimated that 80 percent of all jobs do not require a college education.” The future will bring more and different jobs, she continued, which will mean demands for more skilled workers, a change in the nature of the workforce and multiple-career employees — some of whom may change careers as many as three times.
The spokesman added that vocational education provides many benefits to both the participating students and to society as a whole, including:
• Strengthening basic academic skills.
• Offering an alternative learning method for students who learn more readily through practical applications rather than with abstract thinking.
