“The problem stems from complaints
from inmates.” Turning to Mrs. Cibula and the sheriff, he said: “We need each other in this situation. Do you think you two could sit down together and work this thing out?”
“ You’re not going to satisfy those inmates! I don t know what there is to talk to him about,” Mrs. Cibula answered, still stewing.
Supervisor Ellis Bingham, a retired Army colonel, suggested that the county, provide special insulated trays for transporting the meals from the restaurant to the jail. He also proposed keeping a log on when meals are picked up and buying one extra meal. “One of your men eats that meal,” he told the sheriff. “That’s normal military procedure for seeing that soldiers get what they’re supposed to have.”
“And we’ll continue to look into the addition of a kitchen, but we can do it at our leisure,” he added.
“I’m well satisfied with her contract. If it was up for vote today, I’d vote for continuing it,” said Supervisor Charles Estes. But the former sheriff advised Mrs. Cibula to avoid grease as much as possible in preparing meals for jail inmates.
With Mrs. Cibula agreeing to talk with the sheriff, the board put the matter of jail food on the back burner until next month when the catering contract will be up for renewal.
