Senator Paul Trible has told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, of which he is a member, that he supports President Reagan’s treaty with the Soviet Union on the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces \ (INF).
Sen. Trible told the committee as it started hearings on the INF treaty that “we will focus first on the INF accord itself, its character, its implications for American security and that of our NATO allies, and whether it can be improved by the Senate. Second, we will consider the principles embodied in the treaty as a basis for further reductions in nuclear arms."
“I support President Reagan’s treaty,” the Senator added. “It is a tribute to the persistence and patience of the President and his negotiators. This accord embodies several principles crucial to the future of arms control: the right of onsite inspection, to help prevent the cheating that has marred past agreements; proportional reductions, so that the Soviets will give up more of their weapons than will the United States and our allies, and the elimination of nuclear arms from the Soviet and American arsenals, not merely reshuffling the nuclear chess board by relocating or retargeting weapons.
