St. Valentine dates back to the days of Emperor Claudius. A Roman priest, this saint is said to be the patron saint of lovers. It was during this time that Claudius passed a law forbidding marriage because of the difficulty he was having getting men to be in the military. St. Valentine, being full of compassion for the lovers, secretly performed marriages until he was caught and beheaded on Feb. 14, 269 A.D. Some authorities belive it to have been 270 A. I).
