In the evening, seven members of the group attended a glasnoststyle forum at the Trinity Church Parish Hall in Washington. (Rair Simon var and Ivan Boitsov preferred to stay at Nancy Reeve's house after dinner, while Elana Petushkova remained bedridden with the flu.)
Dr. Denise Hershkowitz Horton served as moderator for the forum, which was attended by about 75 county residents.
On Saturday, some of the group took a day trip to Richmond, where Ivan Boistov found his Civil War fancy fulfilled. Donna Dalton said that he and Ivan Simonyan spent “it seemed like hours" in the Museum of the Confederacy. Another group, led by Maurice and Jane Herndon, spent the day sightseeing on Skyline Drive and Luray Caverns.
In the evening, there were several dinner parties for the guests at homes in the county. Messrs. Boistov and Simonyan joined Efam Gamburg and Elana Schortladze at Bill and Mitzie Young’s house. The Helmers’ two guests elected to stay at home after dinner.
In Gid Brown Hollow, Alexei Pankin and Valentin Chernykh joined a dinner at the Keyser Mountain farm of Charles Russell and Walter Nicholls. After dinner, entertainment was provided by Linda Orfila and Joe Butler, who led the group in folk songs which lasted w ell into the night.
After a free morning on Sunday, lunch and swimming were on the menu at Blackwater Homestead, the home of Sid and Margaret Gottlieb and Ruth and Bob Gowell.
Meanwhile, another group, led by Dave Konick and Chris and Robby Parrish, went canoeing on the Thornton River. They put in at Laurel Mills and, despite Ivan Boistov and Nikky Konick taking a dunking, they thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
