Mayor Morehouse replied that it depends on the use, whether the properties perc and what setbacks are required.
Ms. Day expressed her concern about possible septic problems throughout the town, and suggested that the vacant lots be perc tested before the owner, Bruce Corneal, presents the town with a building plan. Otherwise, she said, the town could be forced to approve development which would not be in the public’s best interests.
“I agree,” Mr. Morehouse replied, “but it’s incumbent upon the owner to prove the property meets the health department’s standards —and the requirements of the town’s ordinances.”
Grace Sims called Mr. Giles’ request “reasonable, especially with the Washington House of Reproductions on one end (of the block) and the Cash Store on the other." Before the rezoning, the mixed use area ended with the Washington House parcel.
“As a neighbor,” said Charlie Eldred, owner of the Washington House, “I feel that the proposal is in the public good. There’s very little space allowed for future commercial development — this would allow some. It’s only common sense to put expansion there, there are already commercial operations in the neighborhood.”
