Junior races are disliked by many who regard them as dangerous. President of the point-to-point advisory council's steering committee Sonny Phillips Jr. said, "I'm not worried about the little shaggy ponies. I do have some concern about juniors riding these fire-breathing thoroughbreds. A lot of them can ride better than the old-timers, but these are real race horses."
Kathy Williams, who helps to organize and take entries for pony races at various meets, said she was disappointed when she heard most race meets would no longer have pony races.
"1 was not disappointed that there would not be junior races. I always thought they were dangerous. But I always thought ponies love themselves, take care of themselves and the child is relatively safe on them. I feel sorry for the children. It's sad, but I understand the hunts. If they ever got a massive lawsuit, it would be a disaster."
