In 1987, for the first time, young jockeys on the Virginia point-to-point circuit were given year-end awards for their performances. For the 1988 spring season, pony races have been all but eradicated.
Emotions are running high on the ponyrace issue. The unanimous opinion among steeplechase enthusiasts is that it is a shame that children will no longer have as many opportunities to ride. Nevertheless, everyone is scared of being sued.
In Virginia, only the Rappahannock Hunt Point-to-Point and the Virginia Gold Cup are planning to include pony races on their spring card. In addition, many of the race meets have raised the age requirement for riders from 16 to 18, when the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association and the major race tracks require only 16 years of age for licensing
