The race committee members who made the decision to raise age limits and exclude pony and junior racing from their schedules are bearing a lot of anger and unhappiness as a result, but few are having second thoughts.
Pony races have been part of the Middleburg Point-to-Point races for "years and years. I imagine since we've been holding the races," Co-chairman Dr. James Gable said. Nevertheless, his race committee has decided to break with tradition.
"1 don't like it, I don't like it at all," Dr. Gable said. "1 think it's tragic, but it's the environment we're living in. Either the society or the law has to change."
Society seems to be the problem, with race organizers claiming that this is the era of litigation. Dr. Gable recounts a popular television commercial as an example of this mentality:
"You've seen the ad on TV where they closed the playgrounds in California. The ridiculous thing is, the ad is a way of raising enough money to pay for the insurance: it isn't looking at a society that would sue a playground."
