I, too, look to Jesus as the most profound teacher on these matters. The basic form of “Fathers of Fate” is the shape of a crucifix in which are images of nurture and destruction. I deeply believe that acting with Jesus' courage to love is the only thing that will save the human race from self-annihilation.
Jesus taught how to break the cycle of war by risking the first nonviolent step. “Love your enemy” is the greatest challenge there ever was to the human soul. God gave it to us for a reason.
If we are unable to perceive the humanity in those we fear the most, we cannot survive. We must meet fear and hatred with a willingness to learn about the nature of our enemy's experience and with a faith that we will find a way to live together.
My talk at the fire hall was a plea for us to share our hopes and fears in the search for peace. It was painful to be associated with those who spit on soldiers returning from Vietnam, as Mr. Eastham did in his letter. For that, good sir, is not how I treat people.
The faith in uncontrolled human interaction that underlies our country’s law guaranteeing freedom of speech is what makes us the strongest nation on earth. I appreciate that Mr. Eastham took the time to exercise this precious right. His letter stimulated deeper thought on my part about what I can do to build a world of peace, beginning right here in Rappahannock where we use words as the tools for expression and resolution of conflict.
