Colonel's Request first proved himself on the 1987 Virginia point-to-point circuit. That's where he broke in his trainer as they both started their new careers.
Miss Wilson discovered the horse at a meeting of the Fairfax Hunt. Mr. Richards was having trouble loading his hunter and Miss Wilson pitched in to help. Soon afterwards she was preparing the horse for a new racing career and, after earning the loyalty of the owner, today trains several horses for Mr. Richards.
"When he [Colonel's Request] came to me, he'd already foxhunted," Miss Wilson said. "He was a natural jumper." After two weeks with the horse, she took him to the Old Dominion Hunt Point-to-Point. "We did things to that horse that now I know better” than to do.
