spiked heels make walking a chore. Watching women "teeter" and sink into the ground is great entertainment for others, notes former fashion model and now fashion photographer Samantha Swann. But who wants their "teetering" to be the object of other people's tittering?
Generally speaking, says Ms. Swann, point-to-point races or even the prestigious Virginia Gold Cup are "not a place for the super trendy. To me it's always classic fashion."
For women, natural fabrics such as linen, cotton and heavy silk in seasonal transition colors such as navy, white, cream or pastels are the best bet. For shoes, low heels or flats are best, but Ms. Swann warns that race-goers should stick an extra pair in the car just in case weather or turf conditions merit a change.
For men, veteran tailgater Bill Shaw says his taste leans toward the khaki, cords and tweed look rather than the more formal blazer, shirt, tie and boater look.
