The Rappahannock County Library’s upcoming lecture series, “Moral Survival: Fiction of the Fifties,” will be accompanied by a series of films based on the novels. The lectures are part of a continuing series sponsored by the Friends of the Library through a grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy.
The films, starring some of the most famous and popular actors in the history of motion pictures, were made because of the enthusiasm with which the novels were greeted by the public, according to Diana Bird, one of the volunteer organizers of the project. “In short,” she said, “this brief series of ‘golden oldies’ is virtually a film classic revival in itself.”
The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, (1956) to be shown March 7, stars Gregory Peck, Jennifer Jones, Frederic March and Anne Harding, as well as a number of recognized supporting actors.
Ten North Frederick, slated for screening March 29, features Gary Cooper, Geraldine Fitzgerald and Suzy Parker.
Gregory Peck will again lead the cast of On the Beach, which will be shown April 11. The film also stars Ava Gardner and Fred Astaire in one of the first, and still classic, visions of a postnuclear world.
