The Fodderstack Classic 10K Road Race will celebrate its 10th birthday this year, and the sponsors have added a new wrinkle to the venerable race.
For the first time, there is a $100 cash prize offered for any male or female runner who breaks the course record.
According to the sponsors, there are about 100 runners already registered for the race, which will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 16 on the north end of Flint Hill. It follows the old stage-coach road from Flint Hill to Washington, along the base of Fodderstack Mountain. The finish is in front of the Courthouse on Gay St. in Washington.
Although the bumps in the old dirt road have been leveled and replaced by asphalt, most runners find the hills are still a challenge. Several veteran 10K racers have called the Fodderstack the toughest 10K road course they’ve ever run.
Last year, the race was named one of the top 75 races in the country by Running Times magazine.
