The ride south from Tel Aviv has many, many checkpoints where we were stopped often, and we were only permitted to proceed in caravan fashion. The usually clean roads are littered with huge rocks — not small pebbles — some the size of a huge fist or larger. I wouldn’t want to be hit by one of them, but that is exactly what has happened to many of the people driving through the area, and what is happening to the Israeli soldiers. These throwing contests occur only when news cameras are around to record the reactions of the soldiers.
This entire scenario is so much like the riots of the ’60s when the blacks in America began to stand their ground against the opponents of their struggle for civil rights. The world is full of people who will agitate the most ignorant. Why not help them to help themselves first? In this way the Arabs and Israelis could finally come to some peaceful understanding.
I return to the north on Thursday, when I will visit the City of Safed, the land of the Mystic and the study of Kaballah — the laws of the Jewish people and their history.
