Also at the conference, the descendants of Private William Smith, 8th Regiment, Va. Line, were declared eligible for membership in the DAR. Private Smith served at Valley Forge and with Col. George Rogers Clarke’s regiment at the Falls of the Ohio. His pension file states that his service was long and varied. The last entry states that he died on Nov. 20, 1850, and that there is no further family data on file. This is no longer the case.
The speaker at the conference’s luncheon was Alf J. Mapp Jr., a professor at Old Dominion University and author of the book, “Thomas Jefferson, A Strange Case of Mistaken Identity.” One of the conference participants reported that Mr. Mapp’s talk inspired such interest that several chapter members are reading his book, and hope that it will be added to the collection at the county- library.
Mrs. Metzinger is the state chairman of the Lineage Research Committee of the Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution.
