This week the House of Representatives approved a $48 million package of humanitarian aid for the Contra forces in Nicaragua and for Nicaraguan children injured in the seven-year conflict.
I voted in favor of this package, passed by a vote of 345-70, which will provide food, clothing, shelter and medical supplies to the Contras and other Nicaraguans for six months.
This is the third vote this year on Contra aid. The President’s Contra aid package was narrowly defeated on Feb. 3, and one month later, the House defeated Speaker Jim Wright’s humanitarian aid package. Since that March vote, the Contras have entered into negotiations with the Sandinista government.
The Contras have been able to pressure the Soviet-backed, Sandinista government in Nicaragua to come to the negotiating table and pledge to make democratic reforms within the country. I believe our policy of supporting the Contras has
