Poor performance or behavior problems in school, alcohol and drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and suicide are among the difficulties which Hjany children experience today. Counselors who work with so-called ^problem kids” find that in many gases a common cause of all these difficulties is a low sense of self-esteem.

Children who do not feel good fyout themselves often lack enough confidence to strive for excellence in School, or may misbehave, become disruptive or eventually drop out. In trying to be somebody, to be notifced, children sometimes gravitate towards others who offer acceptance, experimenting with drugs, alcohol or sex to try to raise their Sense of worth in their own eyes and those of their peers. In other cases, the children may feel their lives are worthless and become depressed or suicidal.

Helping childen feel like they’re somebody special by developing a positive view of themselves is the theme of a PTA-sponsored workshop, “Building Self-Esteem in Children.” The seminar will be held at the Rappahannock County Elementary School on Monday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m.

The workshop will include a panel discussion by a group of local residents who have experience in various aspects of enhancing the selfesteem of children. The panelists will include:
