trees and plants which did grow were watered by hand with water carried in on the backs of donkeys. Today the land is irrigated, fertilized and maintained in the most modem way.
My cousin owns about IV2 acres of greenhouse tomatoes which, when almost ripe, are shipped to many European countries and even the United States.
They are assisted in their labors in the greenhouses by hard-working Arab men and women. All work side-by-side in harmony. These Arabs are not unfriendly, nor are they impoverished or unhappy. They live on land which Egypt never wanted until the Israelis began to clear and cultivate it.
Traditionally, the Arab farmer who scraped a meager living from this barren land dug very large holes for his chosen crops and allowed the plantings to seek water on their own. Roots burrowed deep in search of scarce water, no fertilizer was ever applied, and usually more of the plants died than ever germinated and bore fruit.
Today, Arab gardens grow alongside Israeli gardens, all green and heavy with fruit. They have learned well how to take advantage of modem farming techniques. If only the young could learn to live as cooperatively as their elders.
We are surrounded by Israeli troops, who are on constant patrol throughout the area. It’s not that they want to be here, but they must protect the people who are living here peacefully.
