After a disappointing start on the spring baseball season, Rappahannock struck back with a vengeance on Tuesday, defeating Bull Run District leader Page County 13-6.
The win broke Page County’s undefeated streak in the district and their 4-0 record on the season, and gave the Panthers their first district win. They stand at 1-3 on the season in district play.
Doug Smith got the credit for the win, with his brother Greg coming on in relief and chalking up a save for Rappahannock in front of a home crowd. Doug Smith also paced the offense, batting 3-4 with five RBIs. Danny Ellis and Phillip Daczewitz also went 2 for 2, and Gregg Daczewitz was 2 for 4 at the plate for the Panthers.
Coach Gary Leake called the win crucial for the Panthers, who he said had faced four tough district games early in the season. With a young club, starting three sophomores and three juniors, the team needed the win to boost its confidence, he said.
“They are just beginning to come together and play well,” Coach Leake said. “This was the first time they really put it together, the pitching, hitting and defense.” With troubles early with pitching and defense, Coach Leake predicted some “fine tuning” would put the Panthers in contention for the district title.
This year, for the first time, there will be a Bull Run District baseball playoff, with the top four teams going to the tournament. Last year a tournament was planned, but fell through late in the season.
“The district is as even as it has ever been,” Mr. Leake said, with seven teams in contention for the tournament. He added that the team’s preseason goal was to secure
