also proposed to get eight percent raises, and in the latter’s case, the eight percent would be applied to a new index scale that “establishes parity between current administrative salaries and the 25th step in the teachers’ salary scale,” the superintendent said. “I want Rappahannock to be competitive. I want to get the best possible staff for our students.”
The proposed budget includes two new positions: a custodian at the high school to maintain the floor space added by the high school expansion and a combination art teacher and giftedand-talented resource person at the elementary school. Rappahannock receives $92 from the state for each child in its gifted and talented program, said Dr. Gangel, who is the coordinator for that program. “We need to show more effort in this area.”
Of the proposed $463,906 increase in the budget’s bottom line. Dr. Gangel attributed $89,000 to the RCHS expansion, coming in higher costs for electrical service and heat, additional janitorial supplies, a third custodial position, relocation of the high school trailers to the elementary school, and interest on the $2.1 million literary loan awarded for the construction project.
As to items deleted earlier when the contract price for the expansion turned out to be more than the literary loan, Dr. Gangel said he expects to have at least $30,000 in the current budget at the close of the fiscal year. The School Board hopes to use those unexpended funds for
