Looking at the project from east to west, Mr. Moon explained, the right-of-way expansion begins on the south side of the existing road at the present junction where the four lanes become two just west of the Washington by-pass, taking an additional 140 feet of property on that side. Mr. Moon cautioned that figure represented an approximation, and that the actual amount could be more or less at specific points along the roadway. The westbound traffic will use the existing lanes after the project is completed.

At the intersection of Rt. 022, the Shade Road, the project makes the first of two crossovers of the existing roadway. From the Shade Road to the Covington River bridge, the right-of-way expansion will be on the north side of the existing roadway. Again, Mr. Moon said, the right-of-way “take" will average about 140 feet on the north side. Along this stretch, the eastbound traffic will use the existing, upgraded roadway.

At approximately the location of the Covington River bridge at Rt. 622 (Gid Brown Hollow), the road will again cross the existing right-ofway to the south side. At that point, both lanes will be reworked, with the steep hill just west of the bridge regraded and the curve softened.

From the Rt. 622 intersection west to the project’s end at Rt. 1003, the project will again take the extra right-of-way from the south side of the existing road. On this stretch, Mr. Moon said, the “take" will again average about 140 feet, although in places the acquisition may be more than 200 feet in width.

Mr. Moon explained that the department’s expanded right-of-way will cross the existing roadway at two points, at the Shade Road intersection and at the Covington River bridge. At those places, the right-ofway will be taken from both sides of the existing road, averaging between 65 and 00 feet on each side. Those are the only two places, along with the funnel back to two lanes near Sperryville, where two com
