Last month, when they learned that Mr. Giles wanted $8.50 for the remodeled offices at the Cash Store, the supervisors encouraged Mr. Full to “negotiate harder” to bring down the price. “I can’t believe we’d have to pay $8.50 out here,” Col. Ellis Bingham said at the time, reporting that commercial space rents for $6$8 a square foot in downtown Warrenton and $10 in the new shopping centers on the outskirts of that town.
But after administrative assistant John McCarthy reported this Monday that his survey found $8.50 per square foot “very close to being the market rate” for commercial space in Washington, the call for tougher rent negotiations wasn’t repeated. Unlike other towns with more construction activity than Washington, square foot rental prices here are higher for big offices than for small, Mr. McCarthy noted.
Mr. Full added that the Clopton House’s owner plans to turn - the building “more into a tourist attraction” by renting small offices to crafts people. “She thinks she can get $15 per square foot.”
