new construction to he finished as possible while traffic continues to use the existing road. Then, as the new lanes are completed, the traffic will be diverted onto them by temporary crossovers until improvements to the old road surfaces are completed. All entrances now in use along the road will be maintained with temporary gravel surfaces while the new lanes are being constructed and the existing lanes resurfaced. the engineer added.
The use of the existing highway for the expansion is another similarity to the Rt. 17 project, Mr. Moon said. Rather than constructing an entirely new four-lane facility, the existing two lanes of Rt. 211 will be used for traffic travelling in one direction, while another set of lanes will be constructed from scratch on the department's new right-of-way for traffic going in the other direction.
The existing lanes. Mr. Moon said, will be improved with wider shoulders, new culvert crossings where necessary, and improved guard rails.
Resident Engineer Robert Moore added that, at some point in the future, the existing two lanes may be rebuilt from the grade up, but that is not part of the proposed four-lane project at this time.
