Rappahannock News Special Writer Eighteen students will be representing Rappahannock County High School May 12 at Clarke County for the Bull Run District track meet.
And what's more, coaches Carla Scott and Scott Mellott predict that half of the Panther entries could go on to regional competition at Western Albemarle High School on May 19.
“The whole group is real enthusiastic and w7e’ve had some great practices,” said Ms. Scott.
“I just hope the foul weather doesn’t dampen their spirits and prevent us from going outside for more practice,” Mr. Mellott added.
Both coaches expect great things from their kids. They’re looking particularly to senior Eric Dunn, who will be competing in the high jump. “Eric could go to state competition if he wants, but he’s got to jump over six feet,” said Mr. Mellott.
Carroll Frye broke the school record in the shot put recently with a throw of 48 feet five inches and should do well in the district meet. Coach Mellott says Frye should break the record again with a 50-footer, “which he’ll need to make it state championships.”
Sophomore Matt Eidson has been steadily improving in the mile and 2-mile run and could place in the top three in the 2mile on Friday. “The best thing about Matt is he’s coming back for two more years; the guys who have been beating him aren’t,” said coach Scott.
