trips to Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and Israel. His seventh mission, an elevenday trip taken just last month, carried him to Egypt, Italy and Turkey.
“The purpose of trade missions has been to find new markets for Virginia businesses for the sale of their products and services. If foreign companies are going to invest in the United States, we want them to consider our state,’’ said Baliles.
“On international education,” he said, “it does us very little good to find foreign markets if we can't communicate with them. We need to study their cultures, understand their customs, and identify their needs.”
Although some have questioned the necessity of the Governor’s many out-of-state visits, the Virginia Department of World Trade revealed positive results.
Last year, 25 percent of the state’s economic growth was attributed to exports. Within the past three and a half years, 7b foreignowned firms have settled in Virginia.
