RICHMOND — Is it possible to hear waves lapping against the bgach and the cry of sea gulls deep within the mountains of Virginia? Though some dreams may be impossible, an innovative idea has made the ocean seem a little bit closer to Virginia’s Shanandoah Valley.
On March 1, the Virginia Port Authority officially opened the Virginia Inland Port (VIP) in Warren County. The new port links truck, train, and steamship transportation to provide an efficient means of importing and exporting cargo through Virginia.
Strategically located just north of Front Royal in Warren County on U.S. 340. the 161-acre facility is only a short distance from Interstates 66 and 81. At VIP, cargo is transferred from trucks to trains; then it travels 220 miles to Virginia's marine terminals in Hamilton Roads.
