But crawling is not the only mode of transportation used by the gypsy moths. They were brought to this country to create a new silk industry, and the moths often move by spinning a silken thread which is wafted aloft in spring breezes, carrying them on to a fresh tree and yet another meal.
The larvae are transported easily, and so are the egg masses. Laid on any stationary object, and small enough to avoid detection, they move along with automobiles, lawn furniture, garden tools and plants when their owners move from place to place, and state to state.
Other methods to destroy the pests, Mr. Williams suggested, include destruction of the egg masses and keeping property clear of debris like tree stumps, old tires, dead limbs and other objects which create perfect shelters for the females to deposit their egg masses.
Other means to control the moths include placing natural sex attractants, called pheromones, in small boxes in the trees around property during the mating season. The scent is the same given off by the female moths, and the males are attracted to the boxes instead of the females. This reduces the successful mating of the moths, thus reducing their numbers the next spring.
Mr. Williams suggested that landscapers and homeowners planning landscaping projects can assist with gyspv moth control by planting tree species which the caterpillars find unpalatable.
