place in something. “Although he’s had bad shin problems he’ll be competing in the high jump, triple jump, 100 and 200 meter dash. You can never tell with Benji. He’s had good outings in all four events,” said Coach Scott.
For the girls’ team junior Susie Dearing stands at the top of the list. Emulating her male counterpart, Benji Roy, Dearing will compete in the long jump, 100m dash, 200m dash, and the 400m relay. “In the first three events she has a solid chance of being in the top three. In the dashes she could break school records and do well in the regionals,” said Coach Mellott.
The coaches also predict that freshmen Celeste Waggener and Michelle Earley will come home with ribbons (given to the top six). Earley has been constantly improving in the mile and 2-mile and has a good shot at advancing to regionals in the 2-mile. She will be vying for the second or third spot; barring a disaster the number one spot belongs to Central’s Becky Runyon. “I told Michelle if she’s second she might as well say she’s won because no one is going to beat Becky. She’s Olympic material and laps most of the guys,” said coach Scott. Waggener will be trying to advance to regionals in the 100m hurdles.
Other competitors for RCHS are seniors Joey Botkin, Brendon Finnerty, Daniel Roy, Zack Allen, Anna Hudson; juniors Timothy Stringfellow and Daniel Herman; sophomores Jeremy Tole, Bayard Waterbury, Stephanie.
