About 75 county residents attended a noontime service Memorial Day at the St. Stephens Episcopal Cemetery in Woodville.
They watched as an honor guard of military veterans raised the colors to half-mast in honor of veterans killed in combat, then listened as the Rev. Jennings Hobson III offered prayers for peace and Del. Raymond R. “Andy” Guest Jr. spoke on the significance of Memorial Day.
It was a beautiftrt day, <?r6wnted with a cloudless blue sky and the trees surrounding the cemetery shimmering in the gentle breeze.
The cemetery is something of a memorial itself, the only remains of the Episcopal Church which was destroyed by a tornado in 1929. It was never rebuilt, and the only reminders of its location are the cemetery, a stone marker and a flagpole, surrounded by giant boxwoods.
