Several passing motorists stopped and offered portable fire extinguishers to Mr. Kilboy, and also hauled water in buckets from a nearby stream. They managed to extinguish the fire with the help of volunteers from the Sperryville and Washington fire departments.
Mr. Kilboy was taken to Culpeper Memorial Hospital by the Sperryville Rescue Squad, where he was treated for smoke inhalation.
Trooper Keen said that, because of the age of the vehicle, he estimated that it was a total loss.
