Yoder, a former engineer for RCA who was involved in the corporation’s hydraulic fluid contamination control project, has some first-hand experience dealing with PCBs. Before its ban in 1977, the chemical was a major constituent of hydraulic fluids.
“The stuff has an indefinite shelf life,” he commented. He also said that PCB could be broken down by burning, with precautions taken to contain the fumes.
“The other way to break it is to add certain solvents, but in this case, what could you gain? The solvents are just as toxic as the PCB.”
