The unfortunate result of this lack of party registration in Virginia has been lack of philosophical accountability of political candidates. Since the Democratic label is now a blurred image, ordinary Virginians can and are confused in regard to what kind of individual they are voting for. Some of those who carry the Democratic Party label in Virginia today would be perceived as Republicans in any other state of the Union.
In political science terms, Virginia now has a strongly competitive political party system. It is now time for all Virginians to come into the 20th century, and to stand up and be counted for what they believe. If Virginia political parties of the future are to become strong, responsible, and accountable to the voters, then Virginians should adopt party registration.
Party registration is basically a “consumer protection” law. Once a Virginia voter is required to ask for a ballot from the party of his or her choice in political primary elections, he or she will beome thereby a responsible de facto member of that party and no other.
Thus will be eliminated the present absurd system of Republicans voting in Democratic political primaries and vice versa. Party loyalists will choose party candidates, and party candidates will, therefore, be responsible and responsive to those
