terruption (1964), to support Republican candidates for president while at the state level they remained nominally Democrat, voting for Democrats for the state legislature.
The result has been great confusion and a lack of philosophical, accountability for Virginia political candidates. This confusion worsened in the 1960s and 1970s with the demise of the Byrd Machine and the capture of the Democratic Party of leaders such as Henry Howell and George Rawlings who are genuine “national Democrats”.
The Virginia Republican Party: took advantage of this situation and for 12 years captured and controlled the Virginia governorship from 1969 to 1981.
Then came a new phenomenon to the Virginia scene - Charles Robb, a candidate described either as a conservative Democrat or a “Republicrat.” Robb managed to put together a new coalition of voters ranging from national Democrats to a group which had been consistently voting Republican for president, and who have continued to do so.
