The subject of Family Life Education also came up at last Thursday's special meeting of the school board to complete action on the school budget for next year.
“You will never be in a situation where everyone will be happy with it," Dr. Gangel said. “The majority of the people are pleased with the majority of the program.
“Last night, in response to the concerns expressed . . . the most sensitive sex related topics were pushed back one grade level.” Dr. Gangel said. "In reaction to the public hearing the committee did make an appropriate response.”
School Board Chairman Beverly Massie said she had served on the committee but had been unable to attend the final meeting because of a scheduling conflict. “Everyone who asked to serve on the committee served. It was a very diversified group. There was a lot of give and take and a great deal of discussion,” she said.
“I'm very glad they pushed some of it a grade up after the public hearing,” she said. “It was very appropriate that they took in the feelings expressed. Now the administration has the equally large task of getting the strands into the curriculum. I couldn’t be more pleased with the level of community participation."
"The committee felt that was the responsible thing to do," Dr. Gangel said. "A large number of those in opposition would be satisfied only by having no family life education at all. We acted responsibly. There are some folks you can never make happy in this situation.”
The Family Life Education Curriculum will next be presented formally to the School Board at its regular meeting on Tuesday. June 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the elementaryschool library.
