Carroll Frye was the closest Panther to an award. But his throw of 47.3 teet in the shot put was only good enough for a seventh place. The top six in each event get medals. The winning throw was 53.1 feet.
Overall, it was a good year," said Mrs. Scott, assessing the 1989 track and field season. “Next year we need to work on stretching as a team. This year we left it up to the kids to do their stretching exercises. We could have avoided a lot of injuries this year if we had stretched properly. It’s also been a long and tiring season, and by the time we got to state, the kids were tired of track. All of the problems—rain, the poor condition of the track, and no home meets—kind of wore them down.
“On the positive side, we’re not losing many people to graduation, so experience should be a strong point next year," the coach continued. “I’m also going to recruit from the cross-country team next year. We only had one long distance female runner this year, and that was Michelle Earley who barely missed going to state.”
The Panthers will be strong next year with many outstanding performers returning, and with their track expected to be usable by the 1990 season, Rappahannock will be near or at the top of the Bull Run District, Mrs. Scott concluded.
