Sheriff Woodward added that, contrary to first suspicions that a cellblock door had been jimmied, the escapees apparently walked out of the cellblock into the exercise yard through the door, which was left unlocked by a jailer. He was in the jail’s dayroom supervising a group meeting.
The sheriff explained that the door was often left unlocked while inmates were in the exercise yard during the day to allow them to get back inside to use the bathroom. However, he said, the door should have been locked when the inmates were brought inside for the evening.
