Two inmates
surrender

Two inmates who escaped from the Rappahannock County Jail on May 23 are back in custody, according to Sheriff John Henry Woodward. The two, James Preston “Dickie” Walters, 26, and Robert Wayne Wynkoop, 20, surrendered without incident Monday.
Sheriff Woodward that Wynkoop gave himself up to Fauquier County Sheriffs Deputy Artie Robertson at the Giant Food Store in Warrenton. Apparently, Sheriff Woodward said, Wynkoop got a ride to Warrenton where he telephoned his court-appointed attorney. Merle Fallon. Mr. Fallon then arranged for the fugitive’s surrender.
. Later that afternoon. Sheriff Woodward said, his office received a call from someone who said he knew Walters’ whereabouts. The caller said that Walters would surrender, but only to Sheriff Woodward personally. Chief Jailer Mitch Hitt persuaded the caller that Walters would be fairly treated, and picked him up at a private residence in Woodville.
The sheriff said the two had told several different stories about their travels during the six days they were on the loose. “Where they’ve been, what they’ve been doing — that’s a good question,” Sheriff Woodward said Tuesday. “We’ll probably never know the truth about it."
He said that the two fugitives are suspected in two break-ins in the Flint Hill area last week; at Wakefield Service Station, where cigarettes were stolen, and at a private home, where two fishing rods and a pound of hot dogs were reported missing.
