Since then, he said, Americans have died around the world in defense of our freedoms, and Memorial Day is observed in honor of all of them. He noted that President George Bush had visited Anzio beachhead, where he walked the battlefield where "thousands of j crosses” mark the graves of the soldiers who fell in the Allied landing in Italy during World War II.
He asked that the servicemen who have died in peacetime also be remembered; those sailors who died on the U.S.S. Stark and the battleship Iowa; the Marines killed in the terrorist attack in Reruit in 1982; and all those lost in training exercises.
It is in their memory, Del. Guest said, that services like Monday's observance are dedicated. The freedom they died to preserve, he said, "is something we should all be honored to be a part of; and to take a small part of our lives, a few minutes today to say, truly, ‘Thank God we are Americans’."
