A long and oftentimes wet track and field season came to an end for Rappahannock County High School at the Virginia A state championships on May 27 at VMI. None of the Panther’s entries—Susie Hearing, Eric Dunn, and Carroll Frye—placed in the state meet. “But just being there is cause for the school to be proud," said coach Carla Scott.
Junior Susie Hearing still hadn’t recovered from her shin injury, which she reinjured in the regional meet last week. Hearing was eliminated from the 100 meter dash in the preliminary heat. “She was beat by Brentsville’s runner, someone she’s been beating all year," said Mrs. Scott.
The pressure in the high jump started early for Eric I)unn when the judges began the competition with the bar at b'0. The senior leaper has only recently been able to clear this height and only after a fair amount of warming up.
Dunn got as far as fi’2, but when the bar was raised to 6’3 he was eliminated. He was close in his final three jumps but different parts of his body knocked down the bar. On one jump he was almost over but his ankle touched the bar just enough to make it fall. Eleven athletes were still jumping when Dunn was eliminated.
