Rappahannock County resident Elizabeth H. Haskell was appointed Tuesday by Governor-elect L. Douglas Wilder to serve as his Secretary of Natural Resources. Mrs. Haskell is a 15-year ' t veteran of the state Air Pollution Control : Board, and has served as its chairwoman for the past six years. In making the appointment, Mr. Wilder said Mrs. Haskell "brings to her new job a wealth of knowledge about environmental issues. She has established relationships with ail «the different common interests in the management of our natural resources." t County Administrator John McCarthy, when informed of the appointment, called it "wonderful news. She has served with great distinction for some time with the state air board. It will be a tremendous blessing both for the county in having representation in the Cabined and for the state in having someone so Well-qualified."
Comment asked on school budget
The Rappahannock County School Board meeting, orginally scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 9, was cancelled due to weather and has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 16. During that meeting, the School Board will receive public comments and suggestions prior to making up the school budget for fiscal year 1990-91 .All residents of Rappahannock County, whether they have children in the public schools or not, are invited to attend the meeting and voice their feelings to the ' School Board. Hunting season ‘average’
Game Warden Jim Bankston reported that the preliminary count for the 1989-90 big game season indicates an "average" kill for the year. According to checking tags, 2,000 deer were killed in the county, along with 30 bear and 35 turkey. Warden Bankston and Sheriff's Department Lt. Jeff Brown, who patrolled the county's roads to curtail illegal hunting, both said that reports and investigations of violations seemed to / be down this season compared with past years. "Maybe the roadhunters are getting the message that Rappahannock County is the wrong place to come," Lt. Brown suggested. y s
