According to the U.S. House Committee on Aging, nursing homes cost an average of $22,000 per year. The survey found that most people had little idea of the cost or underestimated it, Mr. Hundley said.
More than half of the seniors surveyed were unable to say what proportion of a nursing-home stay would be covered by Medicare. Many guessed that Medicare would cover about 29 percent of the cost, but the average amount covered by Medicare is only four percent, according to the National Foundation for Long-Term Care.

bloodmobile
in Marshall
The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at the Marshall Baptist Church, 1 p.m.-6 p.m., Monday, Jan. 15, with a goal of collecting 50 units, or pints.
So far this fiscal year, which be1 gan July 1, blood collections by the Fauquier Chapter of the Red Cross have been running about 95 percent of the goal, which is encouraging, according to George Borjes, chairman of the chapter’s blood services. “But it is important to reach or exceed the goal for each Bloodmobile,” he said, “because of sporadic shortages of O-type blood, the type found in most people.”
The Bloodmobile in Warrenton last week collected 78 units against a goal of 70, Mr. Boijes reported. The Marshall Bloodmobiles Save been exceeding the goals for some time now. The blood drive last August yielded 55 pints against the goal of
Mrs. Hazel Williams, captain of the Marshall blood team, said she hopes to equal or exceed that number now. She noted that everyone who donated in August is eligible to give again and that there probably are residents in the northern part of the county who have never donated.
