Get some momentum before going up a hill and keep up your speed as you ascend. If you try to climb a hill slowly, you’re likely to get stuck half-way up and prevent cars behind you from getting to the top as well.
• Increase your stopping distance. Take your foot off the gas and coast from the middle of the block up to a stop sign — don’t brake at the end as you do when the pavement is dry. *
• Use lower gears to decelerate and to pull out from a stopped position. Shift into a lower gear before you come to a stop, to aid in safely slowing down the car. The same is true when you pull out — a lower gear will help you get moving gradually and safely.
• Use chains or studs if conditions warrant.
• Put honest-to-goodness snow tires on your car. All-weather tires are good, but snow tires are even better for gripping snow-covered pavement.
