I think about that precedent every time I flush

I think about that precedent every time I flush my john. A former owner of my house put the drainfield for my septic system in the field in front of my house, not on the lot on which my house sits. There are many other such historic precedents in the Town, I am told, including the priginal Stuart residence (now owned by Rob and Susan Parrish), the building in which the Country Heritage shop and apartment are located, The Inn, Foster-Harris ,House, and my neighbors, Gay Street Inn.

It is a good precedent, I believe, and not just for selfish reasons.

There are many aging septic systems and drainfields in the Town, serving developed lots substantially Smaller than the acre and a half minimum lot sizes in the Stuart subdivision. There are no “alternate” drainfield sites for any of these lots. When those drainfields start filling, Won’t it be better to have a precedent for allowing drainfields on other lots of cooperating neighbors than to have properties condemned or “Johnny on the Spots” in backwards or a public outcry for a sewage jsystem that none of us — or the Town — can afford?

On your second point, my response is that the days of the “good ole boy,” “scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” politics of the Town are gone! As reporter for this paper, you have sat through hours and hours of monthly and special meetings of this Council since July, 1986, and, if you haven’t realized that, then wake up! The business of the Town is being conducted around the Council table in the Courtroom, not over the hood of a truck parked in front of Baldwin’s, and it is being conducteddiTthe public interest, not the interest oksmy individual.
