for office space for the Extension Service office. Mr. McCarthy said there is a possibility of leasing the space for $833 per month plus utilities. The cost works out to a little more than $5 per square foot, compared to $7.50 per square foot that the county is paying to lease space for the Health Department, Mr. McCarthy said. There would be enough space for offices for the two Extension agents, a reception area, and a conference room. There is also a large loft space for storing records.
The problem with that location, Mr. McCarthy said, is that it does not provide for handicapped access. He said a buzzer could be installed downstairs and Extension agents could come down to meet with handicapped clients. Once the Extension Service was moved to that space, the current Extension office could be repaired (its floor has sagged because of the weight of records being stored there) and Mr. McCarthy could move his office to the Extension building.
The building inspector, who shares office space with Mr. McCarthy, could move into office space in the' Commissioner of Revenue’s building once the jail addition is completed and the sheriff moves out.
In other action at the Jan. 3 meeting, the Board of Supervisors:
• re-elected Hubert Gilkey as chairman and Charles K. “Pete” Estes as vice-chairman.
• appointed Mike Massie, Mr. Estes, Sharon Pierce and John Clark Jr. to work with Mr. Luke and Mr. McCarthy in preparing proposals for bids for conducting studies of affordable housing and the general commercial area. This committee will also review the bids when they are received and make recommendations to the board.
• approved a resolution in support of the budget of the Community Services Board and reappointed the Rev. Jennings Hobson III to another term on that board.
• adopted the state’s motor vehicle laws as local ordinances so that when the Sheriffs Department issues a citation or makes an arrest for violating traffic laws the fines collected after conviction will go into the county treasury rather than to the state’s general fiind.
• approved the purchase of two new vehicles for the Sheriffs Department.
• recommended that the Planning Commission hold a public hearing on the proposed Capital Improvements Plan.
• approved a special exception for Briargate Lodge to expand to 10 rooms for bed and breakfast, with dining facilities for 20 for three meals a day.
