Amissville added
to cable TV plan

Residents of Chester Gap, Flint Hill, Washington, Sperryville and Amissville may have cable TV in a little more than a year, if the process of working out a franchise agreement proceeds smoothly.
At last Wednesday’s Board of Supervisors’ meeting, theJboard agreed to Adelphia Cable Communications’ request for a proposal. This means that County Administrator John McCarthy and Commonwealth Attorney Peter Luke will prepare a proposal and invite Adelphia and any other interested company to submit a bid for a franchise to install and operate a cable TV franchise in Rappahannock County.
Following last month’s meeting when Adelphia’s request was tabled, Joseph Price, Virginia Regional Manager for the company, said he had taken another look at the Amissville area and concluded that the company could provide service to Amissville residents. “I knew you could figure out a way,” Jackson District representative Ellis Bingham said.
Mr. Price pointed out that his company leases pole space from other utility companies, so it will be following the power line to Amissville, not U.S. 211. Adelphia’s policy is to offer service in areas that have 15 houses per mile. To bring the service to Amissville, the company had to agree to provide service with only ten and a half houses per mile, he said.
“Using that criteria, why not go down U.S. 522 to Woodville?” Stonewall-Hawthom representative Robert Anderson asked.
“You are talking about using one group of constituents to subsidize another,” Mr. Price said.
“One of my concerns is that we use the company that would serve the most people in the county,” Mr. Anderson said.
