The exhibitor expects the judge to compare his/her product with a standard. The product which most nearly resembles the standard is awarded first place or the blue ribbon. The exhibits on display serve a second purpose, too. They are educational to the viewers who pass through the building. Viewers of the exhibit see what qualities are desirable in the winning entries and can evaluate their own products at home against these standards.
